Daily Dyking

Pictures and ramblings from the Dykeside.

Day eight
Rebuild

The final day on the job was spent tidying stone and grading dirt into the dips around the dyke.

12.2m rebuilt from the sloping section until the corner and coped.

Didn't measure the height but would guess from the ground to level before copes would be 1m high.

With the copes on the dyke would be 1.2m or higher in places.

The garden side would be a consistent 0.5m to 0.6m high with a cope on top.

An enjoyable rebuild here with plenty of stone coming out to use again.

Until the next day, be generous with your hearting.

Day seven

Rebuild

Arrive on site for 8.40a.m. Ready to tackle the corner and move some big stones.

Move the middle corner stone out of the wall to build under it.

With the lower half set it was time to lift the middle stone back in.

By mid morning the corner was up to height and back filled.

Time to get coping form the corner running uphill towards the tree stump.

After coping everything that was built up to height it was lunch time.

After lunch I set out to build the wall into the old wall to terminate at that point.

Once copes were on the sloping section it was time to head for home.

Until the next day, be generous with your hearting.

Day six

Rebuild

Arrive on site for 8a.m. Time to start another week with stripping out until the corner.

After stripping out for two hours it's time for a quick fli cup.

With another couple founds reset and back filled the section was ready to build on.

Build up to the line before lunch with a total of 1.5m built up to height.

After lunch it I was on a mission to move the biggest found yet up and into the wall.

With that achieved I was able to build up to height for another 0.5m to make today's total 2m up to height.

Time to head for the hills before the heavens open and make the site a mud bath.

Until the next day, be generous with your hearting.

Day five
Rebuild

Arrive on site for 8.40a.m. With no side quests on route today.

To get warmed up I back filled and pined with stones around the two founds that were reset yesterday.

After that It was building up to height over the 2m section.

Stopped for an early lunch at 11.30a.m. With the section around two thirds up to height.

After lunch I built up to height over the 2m section and tidied up the left over stones.

Windy again today making the string line wander off from straight if your not careful.

I call it a day once the section is up to height due to the wind and limited space for tear down.

A total of 8m up to height at the end of the weeks work with 4m to go until the corner.

Until the next day, be generous with your hearting.

Day four
Rebuild

Side quest one of the day was to help swap a wheel out due to a nail in the tyre.

Arrive on site for a 9.20a.m. Start a bit later than I was intending but we'll get the meters in with the sun shining today.

Build up to height on the founds that were reset yesterday afternoon.

Side quest two was to walk my furry pawed friend who was hanging out with me for the day.

After a French style lunch of eating, walking and sleeping (I didn't sleep but did lay back with my hat over my eyes) it was back to work stripping out the next section.

Running low on space down closer to the corner I pile up the stones more than usual.

Two more monster founds dug out and reset back into the line of the wall.

The wind took it out of me today so called it a day at 3p.m. to go home to walk my fury pawed friend again.

Until the next day, be generous with your hearting.

Day three
Rebuild

Arrive on site 9a.m. Start by hearting up behind the two founds that were reset at the end of day two.

Once I had the founds filled I built to the top height over a 2m section.

Lunch was at 12.50p.m. Today to try get a good chunk under my belt before any rain that was forecast.

At 1.20p.m. the rain hadn't set in heavy so I cracked on with digging out the next two founds to reset.

I manage to get the dirt and hearting out down to the level of the stone drain seen in pictures.

With the next two founds reset I managed to keep going through the rain heart up behind them until it got unsafe to work in the wet slippy mud.

The days work was done by 3p.m. Just as the ground was getting slick and waterproofs would've been needed.

Until the next day, be generous with your hearting.

Day two
Rebuild

Arrive on site 8.35a.m. Admin for 5minutes then start at 8.40a.m.

Reset two found stones that have fallen out of line due to roots or soil in the dyke over time.

Build up over a 2m section on top of the newly reset founds.

Stop for lunch at 12noon and continue building at 12.30p.m.

Finish the 2m section at around 2p.m. Then tidy up stones into two piles of hearting and line up copes.

Strip out the next 3m section to have a total of 4m down to build up.

Dig out the next two founds that have fallen out and reset them back in line.

Tidy up and away at 4.45p.m. With a total of 1.9m up to height and x4 founds reset equaling 2.5m of founds moved back in line for the day.

Until the next day, be generous with your hearting.

Rebuild Begins

Arrive onsite for 9a.m. and remember to take the before pictures.

Start stripping out the collapsed wall over a 4m section.

Realize I forgot my blower for clearing out the loose dirt and leaves.

A quick phone call to a customer see's me sorted with a lend of their blower within 10mins of realizing my error.

Stripped out and cleaned out in time for lunch at 12noon.

Crack the whip at 12.30p.m. set up a couple bars at each end and string line between them.

Re set one found and build up to height over a 2m section.

Just like that it's 5p.m. and home time.

Until the next day, be generous with your hearting.
